Super windy Wednesday night race

Route ran southeast first against a strong outgoing tidal current.  The western part of the bay was where the real crazy wind/rain/darkness happened.

Wind and rain from the south.  Gusting to around 30 knots.  It gave us plenty to deal with but the boat handled it well.  We had the 2nd reef in for the first quarter of the race and until we went to full sail during a long lull.  A little later on the winds really came back with a vengeance.

Nearby NOAA weather station…

Route was start at the Coast Guard buoy, down to #14, up to #9 and finish back at CG buoy.   We finished in 1 hour 7 minutes or so.  3rd of 3 boats.  We will see if the handicap time adjustment puts us up.  I think we’ll end up 2nd place but could have been close enough for 1st.  We’ll see.

Two of us - with Corey Knapp.

Boat speed of 6.9 knots going downwind, a new record for the boat.  The western part of the bay was very windy.

We had some heeling angles a little over 40 degrees.  After the race we had a knock down that took us to 48 degrees.  Water was over the rail and even over the cockpit seats.  Corey slid down off the deck and clung to the lifelines.  We were taking down the jib and had the outboard motor running.  It spun sideways for some reason which put us sideways to the wind and the main was locked off tight - so the wind against the main sent us over.
